Adorni Memorial Recreation Facility
While employed at MWM Architects in Oakland, CA, a W | A Associates staff member provided programming, architectural design, permit and project management services for the Adorni Memorial Recreation Facility, approximately 19,000 square feet. Due to the project’s location on the historic waterfront in downtown Eureka, a design theme was established that blends the Victorian elements of the downtown buildings with marine warehouses, docs, parks and other water related uses that exist along the waterfront. The project includes 500 feet of developed shoreline access via landscaped walkways and boardwalk elements.
The building contains a three-court basketball/volleyball gymnasium (convertible to multi-use community social hall with preparation kitchen), aerobic exercise room, weight room, shower/locker facilities, arts and crafts and community meeting rooms. Boat and fishing facilities are integrated into pedestrian ways, which converge at the site. Cost $3.7 million. Completion: Fall 1991.
